Microsoft today announced that they are bringing back full Visual Basic development editor to Office for Mac. A limited Visual Basic development environment already shipped with the Office 2016 for Mac. Based on the feedback from customers, Microsoft is now going to include full environment on the Mac. Visual Basic IDE with the full editor, including multiple code windows, breakpoints, watches, the Object Browser, and more will be delivered as an update later this fall.

This VB IDE feature will be available only for Word, Excel and PowerPoint for Mac. Microsoft will also be releasing this feature to Office Insiders in the Fast Ring in the coming weeks.

The Mac BU [Business Unit] announced it is bringing VBA-language support back to the next version of Office for Mac. Sharing information with customers as early as possible continues to be a priority for the Mac BU to allow customers to plan for their software needs. Although the Mac BU increased support in Office 2008 with alternate scripting tools such as Automator and AppleScript — and also worked with MacTech Magazine to create a reference guide, available at http://www.mactech.com/vba-transition-guide — the team recognizes that VBA-language support is important to a select group of customers who rely on sharing macros across platforms. The Mac BU is always working to meet customers’ needs and already is hard at work on the next version of Office for Mac.

There’s a couple of ways to take announcements like this. The positive: the company is listening. The negative: what was it thinking when it cut the feature?

By the time Mac Office vNext is out of the door, I imagine many potential VBA users will have found other solutions.

1. Today, we are excited to announce the general availability of Visual Studio 2019 for Mac – the next major version of our.NET IDE on the Mac. This release is now available as an update in the Stable channel for existing Visual Studio for Mac users, and new users can download and install it today as well.
2. Chipmunk BASIC is a BASIC interpreter for Mac OS X, Linux and Windows. There is also an older version for Mac OS 9 Classic. The interpreter provides you a traditional BASIC command line interface where you can enter programs directly and execute them, although you can also use a text editor to write your program before passing it to the.
3. Visual Basic (my preferred option) seems not to be present at all in Outlook 2016 on Mac!! I can't even find the VB editor (while I do find it for e.g. AppleScript might allow to do that. But I just do not find any documentation on the outlook API. Plus, it seems to only allow very basic automation.

The other point of interest: while Microsoft’s Mac BU is benefiting from Apple’s strength, I doubt that is enough to compensate for the lost Windows sales which are also implied.
